Suited

Suited means that cards are of the same suit. A suited starting hand has two hole cards of one suit, for example ace and jack of hearts. Being suited gives extra chances to make a flush.

The simple explanation

Suited hands are a little stronger than the same hand of different suits. The flush chance adds only a small amount of equity, about 2 to 3 percent, but it also adds drawing and bluffing options after the flop.

A closer look

Suited does not make a bad hand good. Small suited cards without connection can be weak and costly. Suited aces are valued because the ace gives you the nut flush draw. Suitedness matters more in multiway pots, where the flush is more likely to win, and in deeper-stacked games where implied odds are high. In notation, 's' means suited (AJs) and 'o' means offsuit (AJo).

A practical example

You are dealt A♥ J♥. This is a suited hand, written AJs.
