Rack

A rack is a plastic tray that holds 100 poker chips in five stacks of 20. The word also means 100 chips of the same value.

The simple explanation

Casinos keep chips in racks. A rack of $1 chips is worth $100, and a rack of $5 chips is worth $500. Players say that someone 'bought a rack' to mean that they bought 100 chips of a type.

A closer look

Racks make it easy for dealers to count and move many chips. In cash games, the chip racks stand in front of the dealer. When a player asks for a color-up, the dealer exchanges small chips for larger ones. The word 'rack' is also used in other forms, such as 'rack the chips', or 'rack of reds'.

A practical example

A player buys a rack of $5 chips, which is 100 chips, for $500.
