Play the Board
To play the board means that your best five-card hand is made entirely of the five community cards. Anyone else in the hand with the same board also plays it, so the pot is split unless somebody has a better hand.
The simple explanation
If the board is 7-8-9-10-J, the best hand is a straight, and anyone can use it. If you have nothing better in your hand, you are playing the board, and you tie with the others.
A closer look
Playing the board usually leads to a split pot. If you hold a better card that improves it, you win. For example, with the board A-K-Q-J-10, everyone has the Broadway straight, and the pot is chopped. When you bet the river, think about whether the opponent will play the board, because you cannot win more than a split with the same hand. The term is also used when a hand 'plays' the board as the best hand.
A practical example
The board is 10♠ 9♥ 8♦ 7♣ 6♠. A straight is on the board, so both players play the board and split the pot.
