Draw For Seats

To draw for seats is to use a card draw to decide where players sit, usually in a small tournament.

The simple explanation

Before a small tournament starts, each player draws a card from the deck. The holder of the highest card sits in seat 1, the next highest to that player's left, and so on. Suits are used to break ties.

A closer look

Seating draws make the placement random and fair. In bridge order, ties are broken with spades, hearts, clubs and diamonds. Larger events assign seats by computer, but the same principle of random placement holds.

A practical example

At a home tournament, six players take a card each. The ace of spades takes seat 1, and the others follow.

Full explanation

To draw for seats is to use a card draw to decide where players sit, usually in a small tournament.

Drawing for seats is a method for deciding who sits where. The participants of a small tournament each draw a card from a deck that is often fanned face down on the table.

The holder of the highest card takes seat 1, the next highest takes the seat to that player’s left, and so on around the table. Ties are broken by suit, in the bridge order of spades, hearts, clubs and diamonds.

The aim is to make seating random, so no player can choose a more favorable seat.

Larger tournaments assign seats by computer.
