Younger Hand

Younger hand is an obsolete term for any player to the left of the eldest hand, which is the player directly to the left of the dealer. It describes the order of play in old card games.

The simple explanation

In old books on poker, the players are named by their order: the eldest hand is the first player after the dealer, and the younger hands follow. The names are not used in modern play.

A closer look

The expressions come from older card games, in which the 'eldest hand' acts first and has certain rights. Today, players use position names such as early position, cutoff and button. You will see these words in older books and glossaries. They are useful for understanding historical texts.

A practical example

In an old rule book, the author writes that the younger hands must act after the eldest hand.
