Wild Widow

A wild widow is a card that is turned face up and used as a wild card in every player's hand. All cards of the same rank are also wild, so the game changes on each deal.

The simple explanation

In some games, the dealer turns up a card from the deck, and every card of the same rank becomes wild. For example, if a six is turned up, all sixes are wild.

A closer look

A wild widow makes it hard to say what a good hand is until the card is known. Since the wild rank changes each time, the value of hands changes as well. It is mostly a home-game variant, and the rules differ, so agree on them before you play. In such games, high hands such as full houses and flushes are common.

A practical example

The dealer turns up a six as the wild widow, so every six is wild in this hand.
