String Raise

A string raise is a raise made in more than one motion, without saying 'raise' first. It is not allowed in most live games. It is the raising version of a string bet.

The simple explanation

If you put out chips to call and then reach back for more to raise, you have made a string raise. The dealer will say that only the call counts.

A closer look

The rule prevents a player from seeing how an opponent reacts to the first motion before deciding to raise. To raise correctly, say 'raise' and the amount, or put all the chips out at once. A string raise is a type of string bet.

A practical example

A player puts out chips to call, then reaches back and adds more. The dealer rules a string raise, and it counts only as a call.
