New York Stud

New York stud is a form of five-card stud in which a four flush beats a pair. It is a home-game variant with a changed ranking of hands.

The simple explanation

In normal poker, a pair is higher than a four flush. In New York stud, four cards of the same suit are better than a pair.

A closer look

This changes the strategy, since flush draws are more valuable. Players need to agree on how other hands rank. It is a house rule, and not a standard game.

A practical example

In New York stud, a player with four spades beats a player with a pair of aces.
