List
A list is the ordered roster of players who are waiting for a game. Players put their names on it when no seat is free.
The simple explanation
When a table is full, the room keeps a list. The next name gets the next free seat.
A closer look
Rooms keep lists for each game, and call names when seats open. A player must be ready when called, or lose his place. In some rooms, you may be on several lists. Online, the software manages the list.
A practical example
A player puts his name on the list for the $2/$5 game.
