Jack and Back

Jack and Back is a form of jackpot poker that turns into lowball if nobody opens. It is also called Jack and Reverse, Jacks Back or Jackson.

The simple explanation

In this draw game, you need a pair of jacks or better to open. If no one can open, the hand does not just stop: the game is played again as lowball, in which the lowest hand wins.

A closer look

The game combines two ideas: jackpot poker, which has an opening requirement, and lowball, which rewards the lowest hand. It is an old home-game variation and is almost never seen in public rooms. If you play it, agree on the exact rules, because the opener's requirements and the lowball rules are not standard.

A practical example

No one at the table has jacks or better, so the dealer announces a lowball hand, as in Jack and Back.
