Verbal Bet

A verbal bet is an oral bet: a bet that a player announces with words instead of putting chips in the pot.

The simple explanation

If you say 'I raise to 100' aloud, you have made a verbal bet. You do not have to push the chips at once.

A closer look

In most rooms, a clear verbal statement is binding. You cannot take it back if you change your mind. This protects the game from players who say one thing and do another. Say only what you mean, say the amount clearly, and keep in mind that a wrong statement can force you to put in the chips you named.

A practical example

A player says 'call' when facing a bet, and the dealer treats it as a call even though the chips are still in his hand.
