Immortal

An immortal is the best possible hand, or a certain winner.

The simple explanation

If your hand cannot be beaten, it is an immortal. In Hold'em, it is the nuts.

A closer look

The word has two meanings in the source: the best possible hand, and a certain winner. It is rare, so players more often say 'the nuts' or 'a lock'. Remember that the best possible hand depends on the board and on the game.

A practical example

The board is 9♥ 8♥ 7♥ 6♥ 2♣ and a player holds 10♥ J♥. His straight flush to the jack cannot be beaten, so it is an immortal.
