Draw Game

A draw game is a poker game in which players can replace cards from their hands to improve them.

The simple explanation

In a draw game, you are dealt a full hand, usually five cards, and you may throw away some cards and receive new ones. The best-known example is five-card draw. Draw games are among the simplest forms of poker and are often the first game beginners learn.

A closer look

Draw games have fewer betting rounds than flop games, and the number of cards you draw tells opponents about your hand. Standing pat suggests a made hand, drawing one card suggests a draw or two pair. Variants differ by which hand wins: high hands in five-card draw, low hands in lowball. Several draw games appear in mixed rotations.

A practical example

Each player in a five-card draw game is dealt five cards, discards two and draws two new ones.

A draw game is a variant of poker in which each player is dealt a complete hand, hidden from the opponents, and then can replace cards to improve it. The most common example is five-card draw.

Betting happens before and after the draw. How many cards a player draws is public information and gives away something about the hand.

Lowball games, such as 2-7 triple draw and A-5 lowball, are draw games in which the lowest hand wins.

Draw games are less common than flop games today, but they remain popular in home games and mixed events.
