Flash

A flash is a card that is briefly exposed by accident, or in some games a common card turned up for everyone.

The simple explanation

A card is flashed when it is accidentally shown for a moment. The dealer then shows it to all players. Flash can also mean turning up a common card in stud when there are not enough cards left to finish the hand.

A closer look

The term has a few uses. In casino rules, a flashed card must be shown to everyone before being discarded. It can also mean showing the bottom of the deck by accident or showing a hole card on purpose. In an old game, a flash was a five-card hand with one card of each suit plus the joker.

A practical example

A dealer accidentally shows the top card to one player. The card is flashed and is shown to all players.

Full explanation

A flash is a card that is briefly exposed by accident, or in some games a common card turned up for everyone.

Flash has several meanings. A card that is accidentally exposed to at least one player is said to be flashed, and the dealer must show it to all players before discarding it.

In stud games, flash can mean turning up a common card when too few cards remain to deal each player a final card.

It also describes unintentionally showing the bottom card of the deck when no cut card is used, or showing a hole card.

In an old game, a flash was five cards, one of each suit plus the joker.
