High‑Low Split

A high-low split game is a game in which half of the pot goes to the highest-ranking poker hand and half goes to the lowest-ranking hand.

The simple explanation

At showdown, the pot is divided in two. The best high hand takes one half and the best low hand takes the other half.

A closer look

In many games, the low hand must qualify, for example eight or better. If there is no qualifying low, the high hand takes the whole pot. A player who wins both halves scoops the pot. In odd-chip situations, the extra chip usually goes to the high hand, but the rule depends on the room.

A practical example

A player wins half of the pot with a high straight, and another player takes the other half with a low hand.
