Pat

A pat hand is a hand that is already complete and needs no more cards. In draw poker, a player who stands pat keeps all five cards.

The simple explanation

If you are dealt a straight or a flush in a draw game, your hand is pat. You do not draw any card.

A closer look

A pat hand shows strength, and opponents may fold. Some players stand pat as a bluff. The term is also used for a hand that is made on the first five cards. In modern games, 'pat' is used mostly in draw poker and in lowball, where a pat low such as a seven is strong.

A practical example

In five-card draw, a player is dealt K♠ J♠ 9♠ 6♠ 2♠, a flush, and stands pat.
