Squeeze Play

A squeeze play is a re-raise bluff, usually a three-bet, made after one player has raised and one or more players have called. It tries to make all of them fold, because they have shown less strength by calling.

Steal

A steal is a raise, usually before the flop and from a late position, with the intention of making the others fold and winning the blinds. The hand used for the raise does not need to be strong.

Steal Raise

A steal raise is a raise from late position, made to reduce the number of opponents or to win the pot without a fight. It is usually made with a hand that is not very strong.

Steal the Antes

To steal the antes is to win a small pot that contains only the antes, by betting with a weak hand and making the other players fold. It is the version of the steal in games with antes.

Steal the Blinds

To steal the blinds is to raise before the flop with a weak hand, in the hope that all other players fold and you win the small and big blind without a fight.

Steel The Blinds

To steel the blinds means to win only the blinds by bluffing, usually by raising from late position so that the blinds fold. It is another way of saying 'steal the blinds'.

Stop and Go

A stop and go is a play in which a player calls a raise before the flop and then bets the flop himself, out of position, instead of checking to the raiser. It is also used for calling and then pushing all in after the flop in tournaments.

Straddle

A straddle is an optional extra blind bet posted before the cards are dealt, usually by the player under the gun, normally twice the big blind. It raises the stakes for the hand, and the straddler often acts last before the flop.

String Bet

A string bet is a bet or raise in which a player does not put all the chips in the pot in one motion, or does not say the amount first. Rooms forbid string bets because they can be used to see the other player's reaction.

String Raise

A string raise is a raise made in more than one motion, without saying 'raise' first. It is not allowed in most live games. It is the raising version of a string bet.

Tap

To tap is to bet all of your money in one bet in a no-limit game. A player who taps puts in all his chips.

Three‑Bet

A three-bet is the third bet in a betting round, which means a re-raise of the opening raise. Before the flop, the blind is the first bet, the opening raise is the second, and the re-raise is the third.

Trap

A trap is a play with a strong hand that looks weak, such as checking or calling, so that opponents will bet or bluff into you. It is another name for slow playing.

Turn C‑bet

A turn c-bet is a continuation bet on the turn: the player who raised before the flop and bet the flop bets again on the turn. It is sometimes called the second barrel.

Unlimited Poker

Unlimited poker is poker in which no limit is placed on bets or raises. A player can bet any amount up to the chips he has.

Value

Value, in 'a bet for value', means that you want your opponents to call your bet, because you expect to have the best hand. It is the opposite of a bluff.

Value Bet

A value bet is a bet that you make with a hand that you expect to be best, so that a worse hand will call it. The aim is to win more chips from weaker hands.

Value Cutting

Value cutting is betting for value with a hand you believe is best, and being called or raised only by a stronger hand. You cut the value of your own bet, because only better hands pay.

Verbal Bet

A verbal bet is an oral bet: a bet that a player announces with words instead of putting chips in the pot.

Walk

A walk is a hand in which everybody folds to the big blind, who wins the pot without a fight. The big blind does not have to do anything.

Whipsaw

To whipsaw is to bet and raise aggressively on both sides of a player who is calling, so that he is caught between two raisers. The squeezed player is in the middle and has to fold or call twice.
