Wired Pair

A wired pair is a pair in the hole. In five-card stud, it also means a door card that pairs the hole card.

The simple explanation

In Hold'em, if your two hole cards are the same rank, you have a wired pair, also called a pocket pair. In stud, a wired pair is when your up card matches your down card.

A closer look

The term is used in stud and in Hold'em with the same meaning: a pair that you have from the start. Wired pairs have good value because they are hidden when both cards are down. In Hold'em, they are the basis of set mining, and high wired pairs are strong. The same idea is called a pocket pair in modern play.

A practical example

You are dealt 9♥ 9♦ in Hold'em. You have a wired pair of nines.
