Seven‑card Stud

Seven-card stud is a popular poker game in which each player gets three cards face down and four face up, and plays the best five-card hand from the seven.

The simple explanation

You get two cards down and one up. Then you get up cards on fourth, fifth and sixth street, and a last card face down on seventh street. There is a round of betting after each.

A closer look

Seven-card stud is played at fixed limits. The lowest door card brings in. Good starting hands are pairs, three to a flush and three to a straight with live cards. You must watch the up cards of the others. Seven-card stud was the main game before Hold'em, and it is a part of HORSE.

A practical example

A player has A♥ A♦ and 7♣ in the first three cards, which is a strong start.
