Draw Out

To draw out is to improve your hand so that it beats an opponent who was ahead of you.

The simple explanation

Drawing out means you were behind in the hand and caught a card that made you the winner. For example, you had a flush draw, your opponent had a pair, and the river gave you the flush. The player who was ahead has been drawn out on.

A closer look

Every draw-out is a bad beat for the loser and a reminder that being ahead on the flop is not enough. Players protect hands by betting so that draws pay the price. If a draw is priced correctly, it is right for the drawing player to continue even though the draw loses most of the time.

A practical example

Player A has a pair of kings. Player B holds two hearts and the flop brings two more hearts, so he needs one more heart. The river is a heart. Player B has drawn out on Player A and wins the pot.

Full explanation

To draw out is to improve your hand so that it beats an opponent who was ahead of you.

To draw out on a player is to improve your hand with later cards so that it beats an opponent who had the better hand before the draw. For example, Steve drew out on John by making his straight on the river.

The expression is common after a hand in which the player who was behind catches a card on the turn or river.

The player who was ahead can try to prevent it by betting enough that opponents with draws pay too much for their chance.

A draw-out is not a mistake by the winner. If the price was right, calling with the draw was correct.
