Playing the Board

Playing the board means that your best five-card hand is made of the five community cards. Anyone who plays the board and nobody has a better hand splits the pot.

The simple explanation

If the board is 7-8-9-10-J, the best hand is a straight, and everyone can use it. If you have nothing better in your hand, you play the board.

A closer look

Playing the board usually means a split pot. A better hole card that improves the board wins. Check before betting the river if the opponent may play the board, as you cannot win more than a split.

The board is 10♠ 9♥ 8♦ 7♣ 6♠. Both players play the board and split the pot.
